E-waste in Fairfield

Screens, towers and tangles of cord.

Why electronics need their own route.

In California, anything with a screen or a circuit board has to be recycled rather than thrown away, because it contains lead, mercury and other metals. So old TVs, computers and printers tend to pile up in garages and spare rooms.

Nearby in Vacaville this July, we picked up a 43-inch TV along with a queen mattress. In Walnut Grove this May we took a couple of small appliances and electronics. Electronics usually come out with other junk, and we sort them on the truck.

Fairfield's Republic Services bulky program lets you set out e-waste, but only twice a year and only at the driveway. We carry heavy tube TVs and desktop towers out from wherever they are.

Military households near Travis often clear out electronics before a move. Old gaming systems, monitors and cables are easy to leave behind in one trip.

Please erase or remove drives from computers and factory-reset phones and tablets before we come. We recycle the hardware, not the data.

Printers and copiers are heavier than they look, and toner can leak. Remove the cartridges and bag them before we come.

Game consoles, VCRs, stereos, DVD players and old cable boxes all count as e-waste, and so do the tangles of cords that go with them. Box them together and we'll take the whole box.

Batteries from laptops, power tools and scooters need to be kept separate and handled carefully. Let us know when you book so we can plan for them.

If you have a lot of electronics, like a whole home office or a garage shelf full of old computers, tell us roughly how many pieces so we bring the right equipment.

Old CRT computer monitors are heavy and contain lead in the glass, which is exactly why they can't go in a trash cart. Flat-panel monitors are lighter but still count as e-waste. Either way, we carry them out and send them to a recycler who handles them properly.

Home offices being cleared after a job change or retirement usually mean a desk, a chair and a pile of electronics. The furniture can go on the same truck, and anything in good shape is donated.

Old landline phones, answering machines, fax machines and surge protectors go too. Mice, keyboards and webcams from a home office can go in the same box, and everything is sorted on the truck.

If you're not sure whether something counts as e-waste, ask. If it plugs in or runs on batteries, it almost certainly does, and it's safer recycled.
