El Dorado Hills homes are often two stories, set on sloped lots with steps up to the front door. That's a beautiful setting for a piano and a tricky one for getting it out.
This January we removed a piano from an El Dorado Hills home. Nearby, we took a baby grand out of a Rocklin home in March and another baby grand from west Roseville in 2025, and we've moved uprights out of homes in Elk Grove and Woodland.
El Dorado Hills curbside bulky pickup only takes items under 100 pounds and no longer than 8 feet, so a piano doesn't qualify. Neither do most of the options people try first, like asking friends to help.
We move pianos on a piano dolly with straps and padding, never on a regular hand truck. On steps, one person controls the piano from below while the other guides from above.
Grands are partly taken apart first: the legs, lid and pedal lyre come off, and the body goes out on its side on a padded board.
The bench, lamps, sheet music and any other furniture from the music room can go on the same trip.
Pianos that have lived in a hot garage or near a sunny window for years often have cracked soundboards or loose tuning pins. Those usually can't be restored for a reasonable price, which is why so many end up needing removal.

Many homes here have a run of steps from the driveway to the front door, or a sloped walkway down to a lower level. We plan the route before lifting, use ramps where the steps allow, and take each step one at a time.
If there's a flatter route through the garage or a side yard, we'll use it.
A baby grand can weigh 500 pounds or more, most of it in the body. Once the legs, lid and lyre are off, the body is strapped to a padded piano board and carried out on its side. We measure the doorways first so the path is clear.
If the piano still plays, ask local schools, churches and music teachers whether anyone wants it. Most older pianos, especially ones with cracked soundboards, don't find a new home, and that's when we come in.
